About / Firefly cinemas
We put films in fields.
That's basically the whole idea.
Firefly is a pop-up drive-in cinema, based in Wellington, touring Aotearoa since 2013. No permanent building, no popcorn empire — just a screen, a paddock, and whoever turns up.
01 — Our story
We put films in fields.
That's basically the whole idea.
In February 2013, Mele Tuilagi wanted to watch Whale Rider outside with her mates, on a warm night, in Wainuiomata. She couldn’t find anywhere in the country that would let her. So — in the way that these things sometimes go — she borrowed a projector from her cousin, tied a bedsheet between two pines, ran an extension cord from her aunty’s kitchen, and invited forty-two cars.
It was meant to be a one-off. It rained for the first twenty minutes. Nobody left.
By the end of that first summer we’d screened in four regions and killed one projector. By 2016 we were touring the country in a very pink combi van (RIP, Beryl, 1978–2018). By 2019 we’d added rooftops, wharves and one memorable night on a Marlborough vineyard where a possum stole someone’s chips.
We’re still Kiwi-owned, still independent, still stubbornly small. We sweep every site by hand before we leave — partly because we’re picky, partly because farmers remember. If you’ve been to a Firefly night, you’ve been part of the reason there’s another one next month.

"We came for the film. We stayed till the last car left. My kids still talk about the fireflies in the trees."

02 — The team
Eight people, one truck,
a lot of extension cords.
This is the full-time crew. Come summer we bring on another twenty-odd casuals across the country — projectionists, gate crew, sound folks, the person who stops the possums.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if it rains?
Firefly nights run rain or shine. If MetService issues a severe weather warning, we’ll reschedule and email you within 24 hours of the original date with new options.
How many tickets do I need — per person or per car?
Tickets are sold per car bay, not per person. One bay covers everyone in your vehicle (within seat-belt limits). Walk-ins and motorbikes have a separate ticket type.
Can I bring my own food and drinks?
Yes — BYO snacks are welcome. We just ask that alcohol stays sealed until you’re parked and that all rubbish leaves with you. Vendors will be on-site for hot food.
How does the audio work?
We broadcast a low-power FM signal directly to your car stereo. Your booking email contains the exact frequency for your night.
